MACON – Macon County Commissioners held multiple meetings throughout May focused on road maintenance, county park management, and infrastructure planning.
Road conditions and scheduled repairs were a recurring topic, with Road and Bridge Supervisor Mike Teter providing updates at every meeting. Commissioners approved orders for new road signs through MVE and discussed requests for graveling and blading from South Gifford and residents on Normandale Loop, Macintosh Avenue, Mendota Street, Evergreen Avenue, Geyser Avenue, and Helmet Road.
Drainage concerns came up several times during the month. Commissioner meetings included discussions with residents Philip Milburn and Allen Bulen about drainage issues on Falcon Street and Helmet Road, respectively. Roy Bane also contacted the commission about drainage and ditch work needed on Evergreen Avenue.
County park matters were addressed, including discussions with Philip Lowery about park issues, efforts to regulate camping fees with conversations involving Ryan Cripe and Charmaine Willour, and efforts to apply for a state Bingo license to allow events in county park buildings. The commission also contacted a camper’s owner regarding removal from the park.
The commissioners took steps to update county infrastructure, meeting with representatives from Northeast Power and MEC to plan a transmission line rebuild between Axtell and Love Lake. They also discussed the engineer selection process for the Old Highway 36 creek bridge project, deciding to re-advertise the Request for Qualifications after only receiving one bid.
Other business included signing contracts with Stronghold Data for IT services, paying progress invoices for ongoing projects, and addressing personnel matters in a closed session. County Prosecuting Attorney Josh Meisner requested consideration to make his position full-time and discussed a bonus for his legal assistant.
Auditing preparations were noted, with Tammy Perkins working with auditors for a Private Single Audit expected the first week of June. Cybersecurity election audits are scheduled for the County Clerk on June 10.
Commissioners in attendance at all sessions included Dean Still, Matt Shoemaker, and Jeff McLin, although McLin was absent for the May 14 meeting. Meetings were held in the Macon County Commission office at 9 a.m. on various dates throughout May.
The commission continues to address residents’ concerns and manage county resources to improve infrastructure and community services in Macon County.
