La Plata firefighters help battle bridge fire northeast of Gibbs

The La Plata Fire Protection District and the Adair County Fire Department fought a bridge fire northeast of Gibbs on Thursday afternoon at one of three BNSF Railway-owned bridges being torn down and replaced in Adair County.

Firefighters were called to a report of a burning bridge at about 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. The fire was brought under control, and no injuries were reported.

A deputy with the Adair County Sheriff’s Office said workers at the site were attaching steel beams to wood portions of the bridge so it could be taken down safely when fire caught and spread.

Amtrak was notified and stopped rail traffic pending further notice

Earlier this month, the Archer Trail railroad crossing near La Plata, east of U.S. 63 near Titus Creek, was closed permanently after MoDOT and BNSF had determined the crossing was unsafe and that there are no plans to reopen the road.
