Excello man held on $15,000 cash-only bond in trailer theft case

An Excello man is being held on a $15,000 cash-only bond on a class D felony charge of stealing $750 or more and a class B misdemeanor charge of second-degree property damage.

Nikolas J. Hulett, of Excello, was charged Nov. 6 in Macon County Circuit Court in case 26MA-CR00305, according to the complaint filed by Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Meisner.

The complaint charges that Hulett appropriated a white box trailer valued at least $750 without the owner’s consent, and that he knowingly damaged the same trailer on Kestrel Avenue by denting the fender.

Lt. Tyler Robinson of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office wrote that the trailer matched a description Macon Police were seeking in connection with Hulett leaving the scene of a crash, and that Chief Joey Roberts later located the trailer on Nature Avenue with damage to the sides, a fender, and the tongue, and with a side door pried open.

Robinson wrote that video from the Missouri National Guard showed a red pickup matching one tied to Hulett pulling a matching trailer that morning. Deputies located Hulett, advised him of his Miranda rights. Hulett led deputies to where stolen items were recovered and admitted taking the trailer and tools and admitted taking the trailer and tools, accordign to Robinson.

Stealing $750 or more is punishable by imprisonment in the Missouri Department of Corrections for one to seven years, a fine of up to $10,000, or both imprisonment and a fine, according to the complaint. Second-degree property damage is punishable by up to six months in the county jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both.

Charges are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
